About the Opportunity
Methanex currently has an opening for a talented Safety Coordinator (1-year contract) to join our team in Medicine Hat, AB.
Working in collaboration with site-based health and safety colleagues and the larger Responsible Care & Quality Team, you will assess and ensure the Medicine Hat site’s compliance with federal, provincial and municipal Occupational Health and Safety legislation and corporate standards to promote the well-being of employees in the workplace to avoid exposure to risk. Drawing on your specialist technical knowledge and experience in the field of Occupational Health & Safety, you will provide practical advice and solutions that support the safety program at the Methanex Medicint Hat site.
Reporting to the Manager, Responsible Care & Quality, you will:
Develop and implement safe work practices and procedures that adhere to federal, provincial and municipal occupational health and safety legislation, Methanex standards and industry best practices;
Assess and evaluate work procedures and environments to identify and eliminate potential hazards or ensure adequate controls are in place;
Calculate site safety key performance indicator information and provide monthly reports;
Complete periodic review of all incident reports;
Work in collaboration with the site’s Occupational Health Advisor to support management of employee injuries, treatment and `return` to duty;
Provide guidance and advice for mitigation of health and safety related issues within the Management of Change process;
Provide support in the development of safe work plans and processes;
Attend work safety control pre-job meetings;
Conduct site safety audits; and
Assist in the audit and screening of contractors.
To qualify, you will need a post-secondary diploma or certificate in Occupational Health and Safety along with at least 5 years of relevant health and safety experience in the oil and gas and/or petrochemical industry. The successful applicant must also either be designated as a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), or have made significant progress in the process of obtaining designation.
You must be well versed in interpreting the following legislation:
Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation and Code;
Employment Standards Code;
Alberta Labour Act;
Alberta Human Rights Code;
Alberta Building Code; and
Alberta Fire Code.
Due to the nature of the role, you will have a demonstrated knowledge of adult learning principles and techniques, and be proficient in developing effective training programs. It will be considered an asset if you have additional training in Process Safety Hazard Operability (HAZOP) and as an ISO accredited auditor.
In this key role, you will need excellent communication and listening skills in order to effectively relay important information to the public and other employees. In addition to advanced presenting and facilitating abilities, your superior interpersonal skills will prove useful when collaborating and gaining the cooperation of others. To be successful, you will need high-level conflict resolution skills and the ability to manage and diffuse sensitive situations when they occur.
